Exercise As One of the Keys to Health

smiling woman holding a yoga matAt Vital Health Wellness Center, we teach five keys to health, and the third key is exercise. We have to have adequate exercise each day because our bodies are designed to move, not sit for extended periods. After all, we don’t have a genetic defense to sitting.

The best type of exercise is one that you’ll stick with. You don’t have to be a hard-core powerlifter or CrossFitter to reap the rewards of exercise. A brisk 20-30 minute walk most days of the week can help keep you healthy. When you find what you like, you’re more likely to stay with it.

But It’s Cold & Dark Outside

There’s no doubt that it can be a challenge to stay motivated to exercise outside when the temperatures dip and the sun sets earlier. Dress in layers and if walking at night, wear reflective clothing or turn your smartphone’s flashlight on. You can also wear lighted clothing so you can be seen easily.

It All Adds Up

There are simple ways to fit more fitness into your day. Take the stairs versus the elevator. Go on a midday jog during your lunch break. Get an adjustable standing desk and march in place when the desk is elevated. These periods of movement throughout the day are all helpful.

Tips for Seniors

One of the best forms of exercise for seniors is walking, as it’s easy on the joints. Walk to your tolerance, and for safety, it’s better to walk during daylight to avoid falling. If you have access to a recreation complex or senior center with a pool, swimming is also a great form of exercise, as it’s also low impact and improves range of motion.

If you have mobility limitations, we recommend you do chair exercises at home. Many video training programs are available online.

Remember Your Other Keys

In addition to exercise, here are the other keys to health:

  • Get adjusted. It’s critical to receive chiropractic care to ensure your nervous system is working properly, because it controls every cell, tissue and organ in the body.
  • Eat healthy. We need sufficient pure nutrients in our diet, and an absence of toxicity.
  • Sleep to heal. Everyone needs adequate rest each night, as our body does most of our healing when we sleep.
  • Pay attention to your mental health. It’s vital to maintain a positive mental and emotional outlook, and a proper spiritual connection.
