How Sugar Impacts Stress & Immunity

honey dripping off spoonDo you start your workday by cracking open a can of soda? Is a big bowl of ice cream your late-night treat of choice? Is it hard to break that “just one more fun-size candy bar habit?” We get it; sugar is highly addictive and has many forms. These include glucose, table sugar, fructose, and honey.

Surprisingly sneaky, sugar also lurks in bread, salad dressing, pasta sauce, soup, and low-fat yogurt. Crave baked potatoes or white rice? Those white foods quickly turn into simple sugar in our bodies.

Why Do We Turn to Sugar?

When people are stressed, they often turn to “comfort eating” sugary foods, whether it’s that quart of ice cream, piece of pie or glazed doughnut. And with the holiday season almost upon us, those sugar cravings can go into overdrive.

The Effects on the Body

Did you know that sugar has a negative impact on our immune system? Some studies have shown that just having 75-100 grams of simple sugars (about 20 teaspoons) or two 12-ounce sodas can depress our immune system for over 12 hours! Consuming too much sugar has been linked to the following:

  • Certain types of cancer
  • Dementia
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Weight gain

Be Intentional

Curbing the sugar habit takes discipline. You’ll need to start reading labels more carefully and making healthy choices about what you eat and drink throughout the day.

A simple switch is to trade sodas or sweetened teas for water. Add some lemon or lime for flavor. If you consume a lot of sugar regularly and reduce or stop consumption, you may experience some withdrawal, but that usually passes within 3 days.

Do a Detox

One of the best ways to boost your health is by doing a detox. We use either a 10-day or 21-day detox and purification to help people switch from a high sugar diet to a healthier eating pattern. We also have multiple herbal strategies to help people manage their stress better, so they don’t have to rely on stress eating or sugar as much.

Get Adjusted

Because the chiropractic adjustment removes interference in the nervous system, your body can function better and adapt to stress better, particularly as we move into the more stressful holiday season.
